Job description: Benefit Assessment Officer, Wakefield
A local authority in Wakefield are recruiting for a Benefits Assessment Officer to administer claims to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support; applying appropriate regulations, and rules, assessing and verifying all aspects of claims and responding to customers letters and emails by telephone, in writing or by email.

The Role
The focus of the role is to correctly determine and promptly pay individual claims to Housing Benefit (including associated Education Benefit claims), Council Tax Benefit / Council Tax Support and Second Adult Rebate and to correctly bill, and promptly collect, individual Council Tax accounts and, where necessary, arrange appropriate enforcement action, both involving a high level of public contact, primarily by telephone. You will also have the following responsibilities:
-To assess benefit claims and the ability of individuals to pay Council Tax and make arrangements accordingly, within given guidelines using available information, own experience and initiative and only seeking advice from the Specialist or Section Leader in cases of a complex nature.
-To access, apply and quote relevant Benefit / Council Tax regulations in all decisions.
-Exercise discretionary powers under the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit Regulations with regard to classification of recoverable overpayments, revision of decisions and backdates.
-Delegated authority to authorise the write off of overpayments / debt in accordance with Council standing orders
-To make arrangements for payment within given guidelines using available information, own experience and initiative, ensuring that the arrangements reflect both the need to collect and the ability to pay.
-To make timely decisions as to the appropriate action in individual accounts and to access, apply and quote relevant regulations and /or legislation in all decisions.

The Candidate
In order to apply for this role, you will be expected to have recent experience of working on the Northgate Benefit Assessment System and Civica Document Imaging System and at least 3 years current Housing Benefit Assessment experience.

The Contract
This is a full time role, working 37 hours per week. The contracts are initially for three months, with a chance of extension.
