Job description: Benefits Assessor - Stoke on Trent
A local authority in Staffordshire are recruiting for two experienced Benefit Assessors to accurately and efficiently assess entitlement to housing benefit and council tax benefit, in Stoke.

The Role
The focus of the role is to assess Housing and Council Tax Benefit entitlement, though you will also be carrying out the following duties:
-To ensure that the right benefit is paid at the right time.
-Completing and verifying claims and changes of circumstance by visits, interview, telephone or post.
-To assist in the recovery of overpayments of housing benefit and council tax benefit and or Council tax debt owed to the council. A flexible and adaptable approach to work is required as well as an ability to deal with several issues simultaneously. An understanding of the claimant's needs should also be shown, in order to make the claim process easier.
-To ensure that thorough, accurate and up to date customer details are maintained and all data is kept secure and confidential in relation to both Council tax and Benefits
-To have a thorough understanding of relevant benefit legislation and to keep fully appraised of relevant changes
-Assess and decide claims so accurate payments of benefit are made within agreed timescales. Perform manual calculations of benefit entitlement as required
-To update and record changes to Council Tax accounts to record liability where appropriate.
-Conduct interviews with claimants, on the phone, at any of the Council's amenities designated for such purposes or through a home visit in order to process benefit
-Organise, and undertake home visits when and if required. Assist and advise vulnerable customers or their agents with the completion of Housing and Council Tax Benefit claims and identify potential entitlement to other benefits and give advice on these.
-Provide information and advice in response to enquiries about benefits in person, by phone and in writing, including email & SMS, as appropriate.
-Decision making in respect of discretionary areas of benefit regulations, process applications, adjudicate and determine claims for Discretionary Housing Payments within the financial constraints imposed by the DWP, and deciding on the payee in Local Housing Allowance cases.

The Candidate
To be considered for this role, you will require knowledge of the Housing and Council Tax Benefit legislation and other such Acts and knowledge of Council Tax Liability, discounts and exemptions.
You must be proficient in IT, especially MS Office Word, Excel and Outlook, and the ability to deal with sensitive issues in a confidential manner either in person, on the phone or via email.

These roles are full time - 35 hours per week - on initial 3 month contracts.
