Job description: My Client, a local authority in South East London is currently looking for a Graphic Designer to work on an initial 2 month contract basis.

You will work as part of a team to carry out design and layout projects for the Council. You will deputise for the Head of Design as necessary including managing client liaison on projects; formulating and giving creative briefs to clients; job estimating; and keeping accurate records on the team's electronic studio management system as required.

Specific duties:

1. To manage and carry out individual design and layout projects to meet the needs of departmental clients and the Council's Communications Team. (Design and layout projects include design for Press, exhibition and signage design).

2. Provide advice, to clients on design and layout related issues. In the absence of the Deputy Design manager and at other times as required, liaise with and advise Chief Officers and Senior Council members on the development of design projects as may be necessary.

3. To ensure that, in the absence of the Deputy Design manager and at other times as required, the Council's quality control systems - approval and proofing procedures, time-keeping and cost control procedures are applied rigorously to all work undertaken.

4. To take part in communications project teams and advise senior communications officers on design-related issues.

5. To operate Apple MacIntosh systems to produce suitable files to enable reproduction by different types of specialist printing, exhibition and display methods.

6. To receive files from clients in a variety of text and picture formats and convert or scan them for inclusion in design and layout projects.

7. To have due regard for the legal framework in which design takes place and undertake to use picture resources that do not breach model release, copyright, trademark or other contractual conditions the Council may party to. In the absence of the Deputy Design manager and at other times as required, advise and maintain standards in this area in the wider design team.

8. In the absence of the Deputy Design manager and at other times as required, be responsible for protection of the Council's intellectual property rights, copyright and trademark protection as may be necessary.

9. To manage the application the Council's corporate identity consistent with the Council's rules and guidelines, including ensuring that design team members abide by rules set by the Head of Design and giving advice to the Council on identity related issues. Deputy Design manager

10. When deputising for the Deputy Design manager and at other times as required, provide indicative costs, estimates and quotations to support the development of design projects.

11. To manage the process of creative concept development within the team in the absence of the Deputy Design manager (and at other times as required), and make presentations to senior officers of the Council.

12. To be responsible for the briefing of suppliers relating to design projects including photographers, illustrators, photo libraries, signage and exhibition suppliers.

13. To maintain high standards of customer care regarding the management of design projects and relationships with clients.

14. To be maintain a knowledge of contemporary trends in design and apply good practice from both the public and private sectors.

15. To maintain professional levels of skill and knowledge of relevant computer software including: InDesign, QuarkXpress; /Illustrator; Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, Fireworks, Flash.
