Job description: A local authority in Warwickshire are recruiting for a Homeless Support Worker to work at their 24-hour Homeless Hostel in Leamington Spa, providing an effective service to homeless people, by acting on their housing needs and offering information, advice and support to improve health and social wellbeing.

The Role
This role is based within a 24-hour homeless hostel which provides safe, cost-effective temporary accommodation for around 22 homeless people at any one time and secure move-on pathways to permanent rehousing. The Homeless Support Worker will have to deal with these clients regularly on a daily basis, on a shift system. This post is to cover various shifts between hours 0700-1430 and 1400-2230.
The focus of the role is to provide an effective service to homeless people, by acting on their housing needs and offering information, advice and support to improve health and social wellbeing. This will include the following tasks and responsibilities:
*Undertakes the admission and interviewing of clients to assess, identify and act upon their housing needs and to offer support to improve health and social well-being. Support service users involving advocacy on behalf of the service use and engaging with the appropriate agencies and services as required.
*Ensure that accommodation charges are paid for by residents.
*Maintains routine and confidential records
*Ensures the maintenance, safety and security of the property and that all repairs are reported promptly.
*Maintains discipline, following approved guidelines, including eviction of service users following Council procedures.
*Undertakes administrative processes including report writing and statistical monitoring and maintaining accurate and up to date case records using the Microsoft Office package and internal databases.
*Maintains efficient and reliable liaison and co-operation with other individuals, agencies and community resources.
*Resolves conflict in difficult and sensitive situations, adhering to Council policy. Deals with emergency situations, involving management as required.
*Facilitates user groups involving external agencies as required.
*Assists with general domestic duties e.g. laundry work, cleaning and the provision of meals.

The Candidate
To be considered for this role you will require at least two year's professional experience of working within supported housing with homeless or vulnerable people, as well as the following:
*Experience of administration including simple recordings of support delivery.
*High/Good level of communication skills sufficient to /deal with customers/clients/external agencies/face to face/on the telephone/via e-mail/letter/verbally present new ideas and proposals.
*Tactful and diplomatic when dealing with irate/ violent/ distressed/ complaints from/ customers/ clients /member of the public.
*Awareness of current issues affecting the homeless, and awareness of current welfare benefits and grants.
*Good Standard of IT usage including Microsoft Word and Excel
*Able to deal effectively with emergencies and situations of conflict.
*Decisive and able to persuade/ motivate others to meet objectives.
*Willing and able to work on your own outside the office/ in peoples' homes/ without in-situ aid or supervision/ regularly/ on occasions.
*Knowledge of agencies and organisations that assist people who are homeless with Housing, Employment, education and training.

The Contract
This is full time role working 37 hours per week, on a rota that does not include nights. The initial contract is for 3 months, though there is the possibility of this role becoming permanent at the end of this contract.
