Job description: Role purpose

To give advice and assistance to housing applicants, in order to prevent and relieve homelessness, in line with legislation, case law, council policy objectives and priorities.
To assess applications from homeless households and those threatened with homelessness in line with Part VII Housing Act 1996 (as amended)


*Approximately 4000 households every year approach the council for housing advice and assistance
*More intensive casework aimed at preventing homelessness is provided to approximately 1400 households every year.
*There is a caseload of between 100 and 150 statutory homelessness enquiries at any one time, most of whom receive a home visit and many of whom have to be placed into emergency accommodation. Each advice officer is likely to have a mixed prevention and homeless caseload of up to 30 at any one time.
*The team works closely with, collegues in Housing to secure private sector accommodation for potentially homeless housing applicants, many of whom are on housing benefit.

*The Housing Needs Service has a tradition of continuously developing and implementing innovative spend-to-save solutions to prevent homelessness and offer alternative housing options. The service aims to minimise and reduce the costs to the council of meeting housing needs in the borough, and to prevent the need for families to undergo the upheaval of homelessness.

*This council takes a proactive "Enhanced Housing Options" approach to interviewing customers, to assist people with housing issues to find the best solution for them. Our aim is to increase customer satisfaction while identifying more accurately the people who need additional help to resolve their housing difficulties. The team provides advice and practical assistance in promoting a range of solutions aimed at preventing homelessness and enabling people living in unsatisfactory housing conditions to improve their circumstances and, where necessary, relocate.
