Job description: Accommodation Officer - Wakefield
A local authority in West Yorkshire are recruiting for an Accommodation Officer to carry out visits to homeless service users in temporary accommodation to ensure that the tenancy conditions are being met, addressing any presenting issues, such as repairs, arrears and anti-social behaviour in order to maximise tenancy sustainment.

The Role
The focus of the role is to provide support to service users whilst in accommodation, including those with complex needs and assistance to move on via a range of housing options within the district.
This will include the following responsibilities:
*Responsible for ensuring that temporary accommodation is safe and fit for purpose, carrying out regular checklist inspections and addressing any defects or deficiencies to the fabric of the building or to furniture and fittings.
*Responsible for the prompt identification and management of tenancy issues such as debt and anti-social behaviour in temporary accommodation, finding positive and supportive solutions to the issues. Responsible for notifying any serious issues to the team leader.
*Responsible for the maximisation of housing benefit ensuring that appropriate forms and documents are submitted within the timescales allowed by the Housing Benefit Service. Signpost service users to welfare benefit advice services to ensure income is maximised and employment opportunities are explored. Provide budgeting advice and refer to money advice services where applicable. Provide Housing Benefit advice for the different housing options available utilising housing benefit calculation tools.
*Responsible for identifying and addressing service user current arrears, recharge debts, or other debts owed which are connected to temporary accommodation, including sending letters, discussing arrears directly with service users and making realistic repayment agreements.
*Negotiation of realistic repayment plans with creditors and support service users to adhere to such plans, referring on to money advice agencies when appropriate.

The Candidate
To be considered for this role you will require the following skills and experience:
*Previous experience of generic housing management
*Knowledge of basic repairs to enable the accurate identification and reporting of defects.
*Knowledge of housing management legislation, procedures and good practice.
*Knowledge of Homelessness legislation and guidance.
*Knowledge of the social and financial costs of homelessness to individuals, the local authority and other relevant bodies.
*Thorough understanding of the housing and support needs of homeless and vulnerable people.
*Good knowledge of support and risk assessment techniques relating to properties and people.
*Knowledge of Safeguarding adults and children.
*Knowledge of equality and diversity.
*Knowledge of data protection and freedom of information.

The Contract
This is a full time role on an initial temporary contract, running until the end of March, though there is a chance that this could be extended.
