Job description: Governance and Elections Lawyer

Location: North East England
Job Type: Locum Local Authority
Area of Expertise: Governance and Elections
Rate: £ flexible, 6months+ contract length, immediate start

A fantastic opportunity to work as a Governance and Elections Lawyer for a local authority in The North East on a full time basis for an initial period of 6 months. You will be working with a variety of governance and election matters in particular as Legal Manager to provide strategic leadership, set priorities, policy and influence the direction of the team.
Responsibilities:
*Embed vision, values and behaviours of the Council
*Assume a corporate remit to engage other service areas to achieve the best outcomes for the Council
*Drive organisational change around the Council's 'One Council' ethos
*Manage corporate and service projects
*Establish effective workforce planning to account for human resources, strategic plans, financial and budget considerations, environmental issues and legislative regulations and governance.
*Deliver MTFP savings options
*General people management
*Advise on information governance, RIPA and GDPR
*Legal advice in relation to electoral registration and delivering legally compliant processes for elections, legal advice at election counts and supporting the Returning Officer
*Act as Company Secretary if required, to companies that the Council may form of hold interest in
*Lead and develop the business support function such as case management system, records management, library resources and other contracts
*Provide legal and constitutional advice to the local Fire and Rescue Service
*Any other duties as may reasonably be required
Requirements:
*Qualified Solicitor or Barrister essential
*Experience of working for a local authority essential
*Knowledge of governance and elections work essential
*People management essential
*Government department management essential
*Current knowledge of local government legislation and government guidance
*Understanding of data production, freedom of information and confidentiality requirements
