Job description: A Berkshire based Local Authority are recruiting for a Local Taxation Officer based in Newbury. This role is to responsible for the administration and enforcement of Local Taxation. To deal with customers face to face in writing and over the telephone. To maximise the collection through a variety of debt collection methods.

The Role
Your key duties within the role will include:
-To develop and maintain an extensive technical and working knowledge of Council Tax, Business Rates and the Business Improvement District Levy administration and enforcement.
-To carry out administrative and enforcement functions in respect of the billing, collection and recovery of Local Taxation in line with legislation, guidance , corporate policies, procedures and standards; ensuring all records are accurately maintained and collection maximised.
-To monitor by working through reports to ensure recovery processes are up to date and effective.
-Effective use of excellent negotiation and decision making skills.
-Dealing with complex telephone calls from customers that are referred by the Customer Services Team.
-To ensure that all applications for exemptions, discounts, disregards and reliefs are verified and correctly processed, ensuring at all times customers are notified of the outcome.
-Process and review payment plans, action refunds and prepare write-offs in accordance with local policy.
-Make decisions on accounts to be sent to Enforcement Agents, monitor progress and communicate with the Enforcement Agents on all accounts issued to them.
-Take appropriate action to recover arrears in accordance with legislation and the Council Debt Recovery Policy. Set and monitor payment arrangements and attachment orders.
-Instigate and control trace enquiries.
-Assist with the preparation of papers for insolvency and committal action.
-To liaise with others services within the Council and relevant external agencies.
-To undertake such training as is necessary to carry out the full range of duties and responsibilities

The Candidate
To be considered for this role you must have experience and knowledge of legislation in relation to Local Taxation and Enforcement. Significant knowledge of effective income collection techniques and experience of Local Government Taxation collection or similar private sector.

The Contract
This is a 4 week temporary contract starting ASAP on a Full Time Basis (37 hours per week)
