Location: County Hall, Northallerton, DL7 8AE
Contract: 6 months fixed term
Pay Rate: £16.35 PAYE per hour (paid weekly via an umbrella company)
Start Date: ASAP 

About the Role:
Join the National Trading Standards eCrime Team (NTSeCT), hosted by North Yorkshire Council, and help protect consumers from online harm. From tackling counterfeit and dangerous goods to large-scale online fraud, our team investigates, disrupts, and prevents illegal online trading activity.

As an Enforcement Officer, you will detect, research, and disrupt online threats while working with local Trading Standards teams across England and Wales. At the Lead Officer level, you will also lead national disruption projects, mentor junior staff, and take charge of complex investigations, including covert and open-source operations.

This is a hybrid role, primarily desk-based, but some travel and occasional unsocial hours may be required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigate and disrupt online criminal activity affecting consumers.

  • Collect, analyse, and manage e-crime intelligence.

  • Provide advice to Trading Standards teams and partner agencies.

  • Lead on, or contribute to, national and regional projects (Lead Officer).

  • Conduct test purchases, digital evidence collection, and online disruption.

  • Give evidence in criminal or civil proceedings when required.

  • Maintain high standards of record-keeping, compliance, and safeguarding.

Essential Skills & Experience:
  • Strong knowledge of internet technologies and online research.

  • Experience in online investigations or enforcement activities.

  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation in practice.

  • Commitment to consumer protection and safeguarding.

  • Flexibility to work unsocial hours and travel across the UK.

  • Experience with open-source investigation tools (OSINT).

  • Familiarity with Trading Standards legislation and procedures.

  • Knowledge of digital forensics and ISO standards (17020, 17025).

  • Relevant professional qualifications or certifications (III, Digital Forensics, Investigative Practice).

  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
