I'm currently working on behalf of a well-established Hampshire local authority to recruit an EHORB Registered Environmental Health Officer for an initial 6-month contract within their Port Health Service.
This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Environmental Health professional to join a busy team and play a key role in supporting the service through a period of increased demand, helping to manage a backlog of Port Health work while maintaining frontline public health protections.
The Role
Based at the Port Health Service in Southampton, you will be authorised to undertake inspections of imported food products arriving through the Port of Southampton from non-EU countries, ensuring compliance with relevant food safety legislation.
Alongside import controls, you'll also be responsible for a range of wider public health duties including:

- Inspections of imported foodstuffs arriving at the Port of Southampton
- Ship sanitation and public health inspections
- Infectious disease investigations
- Enforcement and compliance activities
- Supporting the wider Port Health team with operational priorities
- EHORB registration (or equivalent fully recognised Environmental Health qualification)
- Authorisation and experience within Environmental Health
- Knowledge of food safety and public health legislation
- Previous experience within Local Authority Environmental Health services
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to work independently and make sound enforcement decisions
Working Pattern This position operates on a shift basis and candidates must be able to commit to:
- Afternoon and evening shifts (1:00pm – 9:00pm)
- Saturday working approximately every 5 weeks
- 37 hours per week
