Family Support Worker – Birmingham Children’s Trust Location: Birmingham
Grade: GR4

About the Role Birmingham Children’s Trust is looking for a Senior Family Support Worker to join our integrated family support and safeguarding service. You’ll work with children, young people, and their families to provide timely, evidence-based interventions that safeguard and promote welfare. Acting as a lead practitioner, you’ll coordinate multi-agency plans, chair meetings, and support colleagues to achieve positive outcomes for families across the city.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a caseload of children, young people, and families, ensuring timely responses and high-quality practice.

  • Use common assessments to identify needs and develop effective, multi-agency support plans.

  • Deliver and champion evidence-based interventions in areas such as domestic abuse, parenting, substance misuse, or disability.

  • Chair case planning and review meetings, and act as the lead professional under Integrated Support Plans.

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date case records and contribute to performance monitoring and audits.

  • Support and mentor Family Support Workers (GR3) on single-agency interventions.

  • Engage children, young people, and families through persistent outreach, promoting their participation in assessments and plans.

  • Work closely with statutory and non-statutory partners to safeguard children and improve outcomes.

  • Contribute to service development, staff training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Participate in the hub duty service and work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours duties.

Requirements Essential qualifications & training

  • Educated to GCSE standard and qualified to NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent) in a relevant field.

  • Willingness to undertake further training relevant to the post.

Experience

  • Delivering evidence-based interventions with children, young people, and families.

  • Completing high-quality assessments to inform support plans.

  • Working collaboratively with statutory and community partners.

Skills & abilities

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and early help frameworks.

  • Ability to analyse information, identify risks and strengths, and create tailored support plans.

  • Skilled in planning, organising, and chairing meetings.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a commitment to high professional standards.

  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
