Intensive Support Worker – Edge of Care Team Stockport Families First | Children’s Services

Are you passionate about making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children and families?

We’re looking for dedicated, resilient and creative Intensive Support Workers to join our Edge of Care Team in Stockport. This is a truly rewarding opportunity to work with young people and families at a critical point—helping to prevent family breakdown, stabilise placements, and support children to remain safely at home.

About the Role As an Intensive Support Worker, you’ll work with children and young people aged 0–18 who are on the edge of care or at risk of placement breakdown.

You’ll deliver targeted, evidence-based and therapeutic interventions, providing both practical and emotional support to families during times of crisis and change. Your work will directly contribute to keeping families together and improving long-term outcomes.

This is a fast-paced, hands-on role where no two days are the same. You’ll work closely with social workers, schools, health professionals and other partners to deliver a truly holistic, multi-agency approach.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Managing a caseload of children and families, delivering intensive, time-limited support (from 4 weeks up to 12 months)

  • Supporting young people to remain at home or return home safely

  • Providing crisis intervention and planned support to prevent family or placement breakdown

  • Working with young people presenting complex and high-risk behaviours, including:

    • Aggression and challenging behaviour

    • Risk of exploitation (CSE/CCE)

    • Missing episodes, offending, or school exclusion

    • Self-harm or substance misuse

  • Delivering therapeutic and parenting interventions to strengthen family relationships

  • Empowering parents and carers to build confidence, resilience and effective parenting strategies

  • Supporting young people aged 16–18 at risk of homelessness

  • Contributing to assessments, reports and court work

  • Attending key meetings such as Child Protection Conferences, LAC Reviews and TAC meetings

  • Helping families access local services, education, health and community support

Working Pattern This role requires flexibility to meet the needs of families, including:

  • Core hours: 08:30am – 7:00pm

What We’re Looking For We want individuals who are:

  • Experienced in working with vulnerable children and families

  • Skilled in direct work and therapeutic interventions

  • Knowledgeable in safeguarding policies and practices

  • Resilient, persistent and adaptable in challenging situations

  • Excellent communicators who can build trust and strong relationships

  • Highly organised with the ability to manage competing demands

  • Passionate about putting young people’s voices at the centre of everything you do

Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a dynamic, supportive multi-agency team

  • Make a genuine, life-changing impact on children and families

  • Develop your skills in intensive intervention and therapeutic support

  • Work in a role where every day matters
