About the Role The role of a Personal Advisor (PA) in Tameside can be truly life-changing for young people transitioning into adulthood, particularly those who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and trauma.
Personal Advisors build strong, trusting, and sustained relationships with care leavers, ensuring that the right support and services are in place to meet each young person’s individual needs. You will play a vital role in helping young people feel connected, safe, supported, valued, and empowered as they move towards independence.
This is more than meeting day-to-day needs. It’s about belief, aspiration, and commitment. Working in partnership with young people, you will co-produce tailored pathway plans by listening to and valuing their wishes, goals, and ambitions, enabling them to thrive into adulthood.
You will not work in isolation. The role involves advocacy and close collaboration with a wide range of partner agencies to ensure holistic and meaningful support for care leavers.

Key Responsibilities As a Personal Advisor, you will:
- Work within statutory guidance and departmental procedures relating to young people leaving care, including asylum-seeking young people
- Participate in the office-based duty system
- Undertake direct work with young people and key individuals in their lives
- Implement child protection procedures where risks are identified
- Support young people to engage in community-based activities that promote independence
- Liaise with and advocate to partner agencies on behalf of young people
- Ensure young people’s wishes, views, and feelings are central to all decision-making
- Support planning around education, training, employment, accommodation, housing, and health
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion, respecting cultural, religious, disability, and sexual identity needs
- Maintain accurate records in line with policy
- Promote safe care and raise awareness of exploitation risks
- Attend and contribute to supervision, team meetings, training, and service development
- Complete pathway plan assessments and visits in line with statutory guidance
- Implement recommendations from statutory reviews
- Organise and support group work with young people
About You Essential Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 3 in Care of Children and Young People, NNEB, BTEC, or equivalent qualification
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people, families, colleagues, and professionals
- Experience of direct engagement with young people in homes or safe environments
- Strong organisational, planning, and recording skills
- Ability to complete assessments and develop clear plans of work
- Commitment to anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice
- Empathetic, objective, and non-judgemental approach
- Confidence to challenge appropriately and advocate effectively
- Strong IT skills and ability to use modern recording systems
- Motivation to innovate, engage others, and meet practice standards
- Ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role confidently in English
- Working with families affected by substance misuse
- Understanding the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people
- Knowledge of child development and attachment theory
- Experience supporting young people into education, employment, or training
- Awareness of local networks, resources, and evidence-based practice
