A client within the Public Sector based in Greater Manchester is currently recruiting for a Planning Policy Officer to join their Place Directorate as soon as possible. The client is offering a full-time temporary position on an ongoing basis. The ideal candidate will have experience of working within a local authority planning policy environment.
The Role
The key purpose of the role is to provide specialist planning policy advice and support the delivery of the Council’s statutory planning functions. This includes contributing to the preparation, monitoring, and review of the Local Plan and associated planning policy documents, ensuring compliance with national and local planning legislation and supporting strategic planning objectives.

The Role

This includes contributing to the preparation, monitoring, and review of the Local Plan and associated planning policy documents, ensuring compliance with national and local planning legislation and supporting strategic planning objectives.
Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Contributing to the preparation, monitoring, and review of the Council’s planning policies, ensuring statutory requirements are met
- Providing professional planning policy advice to colleagues, elected members, developers, and members of the public
- Representing the Council’s spatial planning interests in statutory plan-making processes, including Examination in Public
- Monitoring and interpreting changes in national and regional planning legislation, policy, and guidance
- Supporting Development Management by providing planning policy input on major planning applications and pre-application discussions
- Providing project support for the Local Plan
- Preparing reports, briefing notes, and consultation responses on planning policy matters
To be considered for this role you will require the following essential qualifications and experience:
- Degree in Town Planning or a related discipline
- Eligibility for, or membership of, the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)
- Significant experience (minimum 6–8 years) in planning policy within a local authority or consultancy environment
- Strong understanding of UK planning legislation, policy frameworks, and Local Plan processes
- Ability to analyse complex planning issues and provide clear, evidence-based advice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
- Experience of Green Belt and open space policy issues
- Familiarity with Examination in Public procedures
