About the Role
Calderdale SEN Team require a SEN Officer to undertake a position within the current team. The Officer will be responsible for writing Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans following statutory assessments from start to completion. They will attend reviews and carry out casework in relation to existing EHC Plans following those reviews.
The Officer will work within a cluster model alongside a second SEN Officer and a SEN Caseworker, covering all phases of education and bespoke placements. They will be supported by a Senior Officer and will not have any line management responsibilities.
This is a hybrid role, combining remote work with attendance at council offices and other locations across Calderdale. Occasional evening meetings may be required to accommodate parent/carer availability.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead on allocated Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNA).
- Write and review EHC Plans in co-production with families and professionals.
- Attend and contribute to EHCP reviews and follow-up casework.
- Act as primary contact for complex casework, offering advice to families and professionals.
- Interpret professional advice to agree provision across various educational settings.
- Ensure provision meets individual needs, offers value for money, and aligns with LA values.
- Support mediation and tribunal casework.
- Build effective relationships with professionals across education, health, and social care.
- Contribute to service monitoring, evaluation, and improvement projects.
- Demonstrable experience in SEND casework.
- Knowledge of SEND legislation including the Children and Families Act 2014, SEND Code of Practice (2015), and Equalities Act 2010.
- Understanding of specialist educational provision across all age phases.
- Experience liaising with professionals across sectors.
- Familiarity with safeguarding frameworks.
- Experience working with families and young people, ideally remotely.
- Knowledge of inclusive practices and progression pathways.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Advocacy and mediation skills.
- Ability to manage a caseload independently.
- Strong team collaboration skills.
- Decision-making in complex cases.
- Ability to identify solutions and deliver training (desirable).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other IT systems.
- Understanding of GDPR and data protection.
Essential:
- Relevant degree or professional qualification in Education, Health, or Care.
- Evidence of continued professional development in SEND.
- Full UK driving licence (reasonable adjustments considered).
- Teaching qualification.
- SEND-specific qualification.
- Experience in children’s social care or therapy work.
- Experience teaching pupils with SEND.
- Commitment to safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
- Subject to Enhanced DBS with Adult and Children’s Barred List check.
- Willingness to travel across Calderdale.
- Operate within GDPR and council policies including no-smoking guidelines
