About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Social Work Assistant to join our Children and Family Services team. This role offers the opportunity to support children, young people, and families through direct work, helping to deliver high-quality social work activities. You will work alongside social workers, contributing to assessments, care planning, and safeguarding activities, ensuring that children receive the support and protection they need.

You will have the chance to work across a range of areas including Children’s Support and Safeguarding, Children with Disabilities, Children in Care, Next Steps, Fostering, and Adoption. You may also take responsibility for Section 17 (Child in Need) cases, co-ordinating plans, chairing meetings, and reviewing outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people.

  • Provide practical, ‘hands-on’ support to families, modelling positive behaviours.

  • Assist social workers with statutory duties, assessments, and care planning.

  • Undertake direct work with children and families, including life story work and parenting support.

  • Chair and review Child in Need meetings, ensuring robust support plans and target achievement.

  • Support children subject to Private Fostering, Special Guardianship Orders, and other care arrangements.

  • Contribute to pod meetings, case management, reports, and decision-making processes.

  • Maintain accurate records in line with council policies.

Person Specification

  • Educated to at least GCSE standard in English and Maths (or equivalent).

  • Level 3 Diploma in Children & Young People’s Work or willingness to work towards this.

  • Knowledge of the Children Act, Child Protection legislation, and safeguarding principles.

  • Experience of direct work with children and families.

  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a wider team.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to produce accurate reports.

  • Able to establish professional relationships with children, families, and colleagues.

  • Willingness to undertake training and maintain confidentiality at all times.

  • Access to transport or a valid driving license to meet the requirements of the role.
