Young Persons Advisor
Location: Ipswich (Hybrid – Maximum 2 work from home days)
Client: Suffolk County Council
Contract Type: Temporary (3 months)
Hours: Full time (37 hours per week)
Salary: £12.22 (PAYE) - £15.66 per hour (Umbrella)
Flexible Working: Options include flexitime, hybrid working, adjusted core hours
Travel: Full driving licence and access to transport (or ability to meet mobility requirements) Ability to travel independently across Suffolk and occasionally outside the county.

About the Role

You will work within the Leaving Care & Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) Service, supporting care leavers (including asylum seekers and refugees) into early adulthood. This includes housing, education/employment, and navigating asylum processes. You will hold case responsibility and manage Pathway Plans until at least age 21.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prioritise needs of vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees
  • Conduct welfare visits and assess housing conditions
  • Chair Pathway Review Meetings using Triple Planning process
  • Support care leavers with Home Office appointments, education, employment, and finances
  • Manage Setting Up Home Allowance and promote independent living
  • Advocate for care leavers with external agencies
  • Undertake Human Rights Assessments where required
  • Build networks with asylum/refugee charities and organisations
  • Maintain accurate records and reports
  • Identify safeguarding concerns and escalate appropriately
Experience & Knowledge
  • Direct experience working with children, young people, and families
  • Knowledge of Signs of Safety and solution-focused approaches
  • Understanding of safeguarding, early intervention, and diverse client needs
  • Familiarity with social/emotional factors affecting development
  • Awareness of relevant legislation and multi-agency working (desirable)
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex needs, including mental health or disabilities
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to de-escalate challenging situations
  • Accurate record-keeping and report writing
  • Problem-solving and planning interventions
  • Sensitivity to equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Additional Requirements
  • Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting welfare
  • Willingness to undertake training and development
