Position: Detention Officer

Contract: 12 months

Surrey Police is looking for dedicated individuals who are interested in policing and see this role as a stepping stone towards a career in law enforcement. As a Detention Officer, you will play a vital role in maintaining a safe and professional environment for arrested individuals, visitors, and contractors at our custody centres. This position offers a wide variety of responsibilities, including supporting the Custody Sergeant in handling detainees, utilising designated powers such as searching and fingerprinting, and providing support to those in crisis.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of detainees, visitors, and contractors at custody centres.
  • Assist the Custody Sergeant in managing detainees and their needs.
  • Exercise designated powers, such as searching and taking fingerprints, in accordance with legislation.
  • Collaborate with custody medical teams to address physical and mental health concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records and utilise computer systems effectively.
  • Handle routine conflicts and challenging situations with detainees who may exhibit upset, anger, or violence.
  • Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and the ability to be firm but fair.
  • Contribute to diffusing potentially volatile situations with a positive and problem-solving approach.
  • Complete a comprehensive training program covering various areas, including the law, conflict management, first aid, and the collection of fingerprints and DNA samples.

To succeed in this role, you must be a strong team player with excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude. Computer literacy and accurate record-keeping abilities are essential. You should have the confidence to handle conflicts routinely and interact with individuals in challenging circumstances. Experience in diffusing situations and a sense of humor will be valuable assets in this role.
Please note that this position operates on a 24/7 shift pattern. While your base will be one of the Custody Centres in Guildford.
