Temporary, 3 month contract (possibility to extend)
Merton, London
Full Time, 35 hours per Week

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Housing Options Advisor to interview and assess individuals facing homelessness, promote housing options, and determine statutory duties under the Housing Act 1996, Part 7. Your efforts will be crucial in preventing homelessness and offering support and advice to those in need.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interview and Assessment: Conduct interviews to assess homelessness and determine eligibility for housing options.
  • Prevention of Homelessness: Provide advice and promote housing options to prevent homelessness. Assess qualifications for private sector options.
  • Case Management: Administer and progress a caseload of housing options cases efficiently.
  • Statutory Duties: Investigate homelessness applications, make detailed inquiries, and draft statutory decision letters.
  • Outreach and Advice: Participate in outreach work, conduct unaccompanied home visits, and provide advice to private sector tenants.
  • Tenancy Relations: Handle complaints of harassment or illegal eviction, and refer cases for potential legal action.
  • Compliance: Adhere to equal opportunities policies, customer service aims, and health and safety policies.


  • In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, including the Housing Acts of 1985, 1988, 1996, 2004, and the Protection from Eviction Act 1977.
  • Strong knowledge of the Housing Act 1996, Part 7, and the Homelessness Act 2002.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to negotiate with landlords and explain complex matters to customers.
  • Strong interviewing and assessment skills.
  • Proven experience in interviewing the public within a housing advice, homelessness, or related field.
