Job Title: Data Protection Officer (Contract)
Are you an experienced Data Protection Officer looking for a challenging contract opportunity? We are seeking a highly knowledgeable and dedicated Data Protection Officer to support a local authority in ensuring compliance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and related legislation. This 2-week contract provides an excellent chance to work with a reputable organisation, offering flexibility and the opportunity to showcase your expertise in data governance and compliance.
Data Protection Officer Responsibilities
As a Data Protection Officer, your key responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the Council’s designated DPO in line with Articles 37–39 of UK GDPR.
- Providing independent, expert advice to elected members, senior management, and staff on data protection obligations.
- Monitoring compliance through the development and implementation of policies, training sessions, audits, and assurance reports.
- Overseeing Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), Records of Processing Activities (ROPA), and data sharing arrangements.
- Managing data subject rights requests, including Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) and CCTV data requests.
- Advising on, and managing, personal data breaches and ICO notifications when necessary.
- Supporting and supervising the Freedom of Information (FOI) team to ensure statutory compliance with FOI and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR).
- Developing and delivering data protection training, promoting a culture of privacy by design and default.
- Acting as the primary point of contact with the ICO and cooperating on investigations and audits.
- Escalating significant risks or non-compliance issues and reporting to senior management.
Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidate for the Data Protection Officer role will possess:
- Recognised data protection qualification (e.g. IAPP, BCS or equivalent).
- Expert knowledge of UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, FOIA, EIR, and ICO guidance.
- Proven experience in a data protection, information governance, or compliance role.
- Strong communication, organisational, and IT skills.
- The ability to provide independent and authoritative advice at senior levels.
