We are seeking an exceptional Director of Public Health and Communities to provide strategic leadership across our public health agenda while driving community wellbeing and prevention initiatives. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced or aspiring Director of Public Health to make a lasting impact across the organisation and wider health and care system.
The OpportunityThis is far more than a traditional Director of Public Health role. Alongside fulfilling the statutory responsibilities of the Director of Public Health, you will lead a broader portfolio encompassing leisure services, prevention and community wellbeing.
As a member of the Council's Corporate Management Team, you will:
  • Provide strategic leadership across public health, prevention and community wellbeing.
  • Shape the Council's long-term vision and corporate priorities.
  • Lead collaborative, place-based approaches that reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes.
  • Influence policy and decision-making locally, regionally and nationally.
  • Build strong partnerships across the NHS, local government, voluntary sector and wider stakeholders.
  • Champion innovation and deliver sustainable improvements in population health.

About YouYou will be a credible, accomplished and influential senior leader with the ability to operate confidently within a complex political and partnership environment.
You will bring:
  • Significant senior leadership experience within public health or a related field.
  • A strong track record of delivering change through collaboration and partnership.
  • Excellent strategic leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience of influencing elected members, senior leaders and external partners.
  • A passion for tackling health inequalities and improving outcomes for local communities.
Essential RequirementsThis is a statutory Director of Public Health appointment, jointly appointed by Bath and North East Somerset Council and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
Applicants must be:
  • Registered on the GMC Specialist Register (Public Health Medicine) with a licence to practise, the GDC Specialist List, or the UK Public Health Register at specialist level.
  • A Member of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) by examination, exemption or assessment, or hold an equivalent qualification.
