Service Care Solutions are currently recruiting for an experienced Highways Engineer to join a Local Authority in Doncaster on a temporary basis.
With a significant increase in capital investment over the next five years, this is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding Highways team and play a key role in delivering a programme of preventative highway maintenance projects that will improve the local road network.
This role would suit an experienced highways professional with a strong civil engineering background and proven experience managing preventative maintenance schemes, contractor performance and multiple concurrent projects.
The Role
As a Highways Engineer, you will be responsible for managing a programme of highway maintenance schemes from conception through to completion. You will supervise Clerks of Works, oversee contractors on site, provide technical engineering advice and ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and within budget.
You will also act as a Project/Programme Manager, making informed engineering decisions whilst ensuring all works comply with relevant specifications, standards and quality requirements.

The Role

You will also act as a Project/Programme Manager, making informed engineering decisions whilst ensuring all works comply with relevant specifications, standards and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a programme of preventative highway maintenance schemes across the borough.
- Manage multiple highway projects simultaneously from design through to completion.
- Supervise Clerks of Works and provide technical guidance and support.
- Oversee contractors, ensuring compliance with specifications, quality standards and programme requirements.
- Carry out site inspections and monitor the quality of completed works.
- Make sound civil engineering decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with health and safety legislation.
- Monitor project progress, budgets and programme performance.
- Liaise with contractors, consultants, internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Prepare technical reports and provide project updates to senior management.
- Strong civil engineering knowledge with the ability to make sound engineering decisions.
- Experience delivering preventative highway maintenance schemes including:
- Surface Dressing
- Micro-Asphalt
- Slurry Surfacing
- Other preventative highway treatments
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Proven experience supervising contractors and ensuring specification compliance.
- Experience undertaking quality inspections and monitoring highway works.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Level 3 Qualification in Civil Engineering or substantial experience within highway maintenance.
- Previous Local Authority experience.
- Experience working with elected members and councillors.
- Familiarity with GIS systems.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
