Probation Officer
Locations: Rotherham Probation Office & Barnsley Probation Office
Contract: Full-Time (37 hours per week)
Pay Rate: £30.36 per hour (Umbrella/LTD)
PAYE Equivalent: Approximately £22.84 per hour PAYE (inclusive of statutory holiday pay)
Working Pattern: Hybrid – candidates must be able to attend the office a minimum of 1 day per week in either Rotherham or Barnsley. Applications from candidates unable to meet this requirement will not be considered.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Probation Officer to join the Probation Service supporting operations across Rotherham and Barnsley. This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week, focused on managing a caseload of individuals subject to community orders, suspended sentence orders, post-release supervision, and licence conditions.
The successful candidate will play a key role in reducing reoffending, protecting the public, and supporting service users to achieve positive outcomes through effective assessment, intervention, and partnership working.

Key Responsibilities
- Manage a diverse caseload of service users in line with National Probation Service standards and policies.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop robust risk management plans.
- Prepare high-quality reports for courts, parole boards, and other criminal justice agencies.
- Deliver interventions aimed at reducing offending behaviour and supporting rehabilitation.
- Monitor compliance with court orders, licences, and statutory requirements.
- Take appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
- Work collaboratively with partner agencies including police, courts, local authorities, housing providers, and treatment services.
- Maintain accurate and timely case records using probation case management systems.
- Contribute to safeguarding practices and public protection arrangements, including MAPPA where required.
- Qualified Probation Officer or equivalent recognised probation qualification.
- Experience managing offender caseloads within probation, criminal justice, or a related environment.
- Strong knowledge of risk assessment and risk management processes.
- Experience preparing professional reports and case documentation.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to attend either the Rotherham or Barnsley office for at least one day per week.
- Experience working with complex or high-risk offenders.
- Knowledge of current probation legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Experience of working within multi-agency public protection arrangements (MAPPA).
- Familiarity with OASys and other probation case management systems.
