A Day in the Life of a Recruitment Consultant

  • Publish Date: Posted almost 5 years ago

If you have been thinking of a career in recruitment, why not read our blog about what a typical day involves? We interviewed two Consultants that currently work with us, a Senior Recruitment Consultant (answers shown below as 'SRC') and a Team Leader (answers shown below as 'TL') who give us insight into their lives as Recruitment Consultants.

Because we have a very clear career development path, we consistently have positions available for Trainee Recruitment Consultants to join our fun and energetic team. We truly live off our values and believe in rewarding our consultants for the hard work that they put in! You can apply directly through our website or through job boards such as Total Jobs, CV Library, or indeed or get referred through one of our consultants that already work here.

How did you find your job with Service Care Solutions?

SRC - I was referred to Service Care Solutions by another consultant who was working with us at the time. At SCS, when a consultant is referred and they are successfully placed, and then passes the probation period, the referring consultant is rewarded with a £750 bonus.

TL - Back in April 2017 I decided that I wanted a change in career, I decided to upload my CV onto the CV library to see what was out there, a couple of days went by and I was contacted by a hiring manager to see if I was looking for work and would I consider recruitment.

What is your background?

SRC - My background is in Sales and Business Development. I started in business development, securing sponsors and partners for clients then moved on to car sales to gain better customer service experience and finally onto recruitment where I needed these customer service and communication skills.

TL - My background is working in Sales and Customer Service. I initially worked within a number of Customer Service Roles including companies like Scottish Power, Yellow Pages and BetFred.

What does your average day look like?

SRC - I would say that the majority of my days are based on resourcing candidates to increase the talent pool in my market. We also spend time doing business development to build relationships with new and existing clients. This means a lot of time is spent on the phone, talking to hiring managers, and discussing recruitment processes within various organisations.

TL - My average day can change at any time; I will plan my day as soon as I come into work, however, this can change at any minute due to issues occurring. With that being said, my admin hours tend to be between 8am and 10am where I action any emails and complete all my admin jobs. 10am and12 noon are my core hours where I resource candidates for roles I have available and submit any relevant candidates. 12 noon to 1pm is lunchtimee (best time of the day haha!),1 pm and 2pm is, again, time I set aside for more admin, then finally, between 2pm and 5pmares core hours for resourcing candidates.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

SRC - I enjoy most aspects of my role here at SCS but I would say that the satisfaction from helping candidates find work is what I enjoy the most, especially the candidates that have struggled finding work for some time.
TL - The best bit about my role is placing candidates into roles that they have always wanted. I also enjoy speaking to candidates and listening to their journeys so far and what they are wanting to do.

What would you say is most challenging about your job?

SRC - The role of a Recruitment Consultant is challenging at times and requires the ability to prioritise and multitask, however, I would say that one of the most challenging parts of my role would be preparing candidates for interviews and ensuring they are on time/presentable. Every client has different requirements and we need to prepare candidates in accordance with these to ensure that they have the best chances of being successful.

TL - The most challenging part of my job is when you go the extra mile for a candidate, submit their CV, point out their good points to the manager which then leads to an interview and then when you go back to the candidate and they avoid you and don’t be straight with you and say they don’t want the role anymore. Some candidates may be scared of telling you they aren’t interested but a little word of advice, please be honest with us – we don’t bite!

What are the main qualities required for your job?

SRC - Communication is a key quality required for the role as we deal with clients and candidates regularly. A consultant needs to recognise someone’s requirements to effectively provide a good service.

TL - I would say that the five key qualities required as a Recruitment Consultant would be the ability to be resilient, strong communication, being a key team player, and the ability to adapt to different situations quickly and confidently. These qualities will help you progress in your recruitment career by supporting clients and candidates.
