We are currently recruiting for a Building Control Surveyor at Class 3H to join a Council’s Building Regulations & Standards Team on a permanent basis in the South West. This role will play a crucial part in the enforcement of Building Regulations under the Building Safety Act 2022, acting as a Registered Building Inspector and technical lead on complex and high-risk projects across the city.
Responsibilities
- Lead on Building Control applications from pre-application stage through to completion, acting as a technical expert and case officer for major developments.
- Represent the Council as part of multi-disciplinary teams for the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), particularly on High-Risk Buildings (HRBs).
- Interpret legislation, Central Government guidance and Building Control policy, including providing representation at appeals and court proceedings where required.
- Drive a collaborative approach between developers, consultants, and council officers to ensure safe, compliant, and buildable designs.
- Provide guidance, oversight and informal training to Class 2 Building Control Surveyors, supporting development of internal capacity.
- Maintain and apply expert-level knowledge in one or more technical disciplines – structural engineering, fire safety, or general building regulations.
- Ensure compliance with corporate procedures, health & safety regulations, and mandatory training requirements.
- Demonstrable experience in Building Control at a senior level, ideally within a Local Authority setting.
- Must be a Registered Building Inspector (Class 2 or 3) under the Building Safety Act 2022.
- Strong technical knowledge of current building regulations and associated legislation.
- Ability to manage complex schemes and provide robust technical advice to internal teams, developers, and the BSR.
- Proven ability to represent the council at appeal hearings, tribunals, or court proceedings.
- Experience with high-risk and complex buildings preferred.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Relevant professional qualification (MCABE, MCIOB, MRICS, or equivalent) desirable.
