Locum Children's Social Worker – Duty and Assessment
You must have a minimum of 2 years recent experience in a Duty & Assessment Team to be considered.

Are you a dedicated and experienced children's social worker looking for your next locum role in a fast-paced, supportive environment? Wigan MBC is seeking a skilled professional to join their Duty and Assessment service on a temporary basis offering £38.00 per hour (umbrella).

The Duty Service at Wigan MBC is made up of 5 dynamic Duty Teams and a dedicated Duty Academy. As a locum worker, you will be on duty one week in every five, giving you the opportunity to balance complex assessments with case planning and follow-up support. You'll receive strong support and oversight from a Team Manager, Advanced Practitioner and Senior Social Worker to ensure high-quality decision-making and manageable caseloads.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Complete robust, timely assessments and interventions for children and families at the first point of contact.
  • Work with a wide range of complexity in cases including Child Protection, CLA, CIN and PLO processes.
  • Participate in a 5-week Duty rota – on duty 1 week in every 5.
  • Ensure cases are effectively assessed and stepped across to the appropriate long-term team following key transfer points.
  • Collaborate with families, partner agencies and colleagues to create safe, sustainable plans for children.
What You’ll Need:
  • 2+ years recent experience in a Children’s Duty and Assessment team
  • Social Work England registration.
  • Strong risk assessment, analytical and decision-making skills.
  • A confident, compassionate approach to working with vulnerable children and families.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and meet statutory deadlines.
