A respected and well-established local authority in the North West is looking to bring in an experienced Senior Finance Officer on an initial 6-month contract.
This is a great opportunity for someone with strong public sector finance experience to step into a key role within a high-performing finance team. You'll be involved in core financial processes including budget setting, monitoring, year-end close, and supporting strategic financial planning across council services.
Location: Hybrid working (with office base in a modern civic centre)
Rate: £20.00 per hour umbrella // £18.13 per hour PAYE Inclusive // £16.18 per hour PAYE exclusive
Contract: 6 months (with potential for extension)
Hours: 37 per week (standard local gov working hours)
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Lead on the preparation and monitoring of revenue and capital budgets
- Deliver accurate and timely financial advice to senior stakeholders across a range of service areas
- Support the year-end accounts process and contribute to financial returns, audits and grant claims
- Manage and develop a small finance team, ensuring high standards and consistent delivery
- Help drive improvements in processes, reporting and systems
- Represent the finance function at meetings and working groups, both internally and externally
- Proven experience within local authority or wider public sector finance
- Strong understanding of budgeting, monitoring, closure of accounts, and financial controls
- Confident using Excel and financial systems (e.g., ERP or general ledger)
- Experience managing or supporting a finance team
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and advise at all levels
- Proactive, collaborative and focused on delivering results
