Be a Voice for Victims. Make a Real Difference. We are seeking a compassionate and resilient Victim Liaison Officer to join the Probation Service (PS) and provide vital support to victims of serious crime and their families. You will play a central role in delivering the Victim Contact Scheme (VCS) and Victim Notification Scheme (VNS)—ensuring victims are kept informed, supported, and empowered throughout the offender’s sentence.
This is a critical role for someone who combines empathy and professionalism with a deep understanding of trauma-informed practice, risk management, and the criminal justice system.
What you’ll be doing
As a Victim Liaison Officer, you will:
- Support victims of crime and their families who are participating in, or being considered for, the statutory VCS or VNS.
- Liaise regularly with victims and families, offering sensitive, accurate updates on key developments in an offender’s sentence, such as parole decisions, release conditions, or hospital orders.
- Enable victims to share their views and make representations at critical points in the offender’s journey.
- Contribute to the assessment and management of offender risk to help protect victims and the public.
- Attend and contribute to multi-agency meetings, ensuring victims' perspectives inform decision-making across criminal justice and support services.
- Uphold and promote trauma-informed principles, maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and dignity in all communications.
- Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds who have experienced a range of social or personal difficulties, including communicating effectively and working in a trauma-informed way.
- A strong commitment to promoting equality, valuing diversity, and working with diverse communities.
- Knowledge and understanding of the assessment and management of risk in relation to offenders and safeguarding victims.
- In-depth understanding of the criminal justice system, including courts, prisons, probation, and the roles of related agencies such as the police and mental health services.
- The ability to manage sensitive and emotionally charged situations with empathy, clarity, and professionalism.
