We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Benefit Assessor to join a team based in Stoke-on-Trent on a full-time temporary ongoing basis. The Benefit Assessor will assess Housing and Council Tax Benefit in accordance with relevant legislation and council procedures, as well as dealing with customer's enquiries, and delivering excellent customer care.
Requirements

  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Knowledge of legislation, policies, and procedures surrounding Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and accessible manner
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage workload efficiently, and meet deadlines
  • Experience providing an effective service to members of the public
  • Experience working alongside vulnerable customers
  • Full Driving license and access to own vehicle required

Role Expectations

  • Assess Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit applications, from a wide range of backgrounds. Includes investigating overpayment claims, initial investigation of complaints, and verifying claims
  • Advise customers, promote the use of available and relevant Benefits, and promote application
  • Identify overpaid benefits and initiate recovery process in accordance with legislation
  • Conduct home visits where necessary to aid in benefit related enquiries
  • Liaise with external partners, including local authorities and support agencies, and ensure effective service is delivered
  • Develop working relationships with colleagues, as well as key partners
  • Work in partnership with the Council Tax Billing, Recovery, and Fraud sections and maintain effective communication
  • Maintain Records: Accurately record all interactions, assessments, and decisions in line with relevant policies and procedures, ensuring confidentiality and data protection guidelines are strictly followed
