Approx. 6 hours per day, split shift (around 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with a break)
About the Role
We require compassionate and reliable Passenger Assistants to support children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) on their school or college journeys. Passenger Assistants play a vital role in ensuring the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of passengers. This includes assisting with boarding and disembarking, attending to physical and medical needs, and supporting drivers in delivering a high-quality transport service. This is a mobile role requiring flexibility to work on various routes across Kirklees. Routes may change at short notice, and while many routes offer pick-up and drop-off at the Assistant’s home, some may require travel to a pick-up point (without reimbursement).
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of SEND children and young adults during transport.
  • Support safe handover to schools, parents, or responsible adults.
  • Assist with personal, physical, and medical needs, including the administration of medication (e.g., EpiPens, Buccal Midazolam).
  • Help drivers operate doors, ramps, lifts, and ensure correct use of seatbelts/restraints.
  • Provide emotional support, especially in high-needs or challenging cases, using Team-Teach de-escalation techniques when needed.
  • Monitor vehicle conditions and report any concerns to the Transport Office.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive medical and personal information.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with children, parents, drivers, and school staff.
  • Participate in all mandatory training provided by the Council.
Experience & Knowledge
  • Experience caring for children or adults, especially those with disabilities.
  • Experience providing support in a personal or professional setting.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, and working within regulations.
  • Willingness to undertake a medical screening appropriate to the role.
  • Willingness to complete training in First Aid, Manual Handling, and SEND awareness.
  • Flexibility regarding hours, vehicle types, and route changes.
  • Enhanced DBS and barred list check (Children & Adults category).
  • Previous work in SEND, care, or educational transport.
  • Experience administering emergency medication.
  • Familiarity with basic monitoring/reporting processes related to service quality.

Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to work on any Kirklees route with flexibility to move at short notice.
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and dignity of passengers if bodily fluids are involved.
  • Must treat all personal data and medical information in accordance with GDPR.
  • Participate fully in Council-provided training and updates.
  • Act as a positive representative of Kirklees Council’s values and behaviours.
