Role: Licensing and Regulatory Lawyer
Location: Hybrid – East Sussex
Hours: 4-day week (30 hours)
Contract: Initial 12 weeks, likely extension up to 1 year 10 months
Role Overview - Support the Head of Legal Services in delivering high-quality legal services, with a focus on licensing, regulatory, and enforcement matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the council in criminal and civil litigation, including tenancy fraud, housing enforcement, and unauthorised encampments.
- Provide legal advice on licensing (taxis, street trading, gambling, sex establishments) and act as legal advisor to Licensing Committees.
- Handle appeals and advocacy in Magistrates’ Court and First Tier Tribunal.
- Advise on environmental health, animal welfare licensing, and coroner’s hearings.
- Deliver clear legal advice to officers and members, participate in projects and committees, and manage external legal providers.
Requirements
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
- Experience in litigation, licensing, and regulatory law.
- Strong advocacy and communication skills.
- Public sector experience desirable.
Working Pattern
- Hybrid work model
- Court attendance approx. 2 x /month
- Licensing Committee meetings approx. 2 x /month (evenings)
