A client within the Public Sector based in Greater Manchester is currently recruiting for an Assistant Highways Engineer to join their Highways Planned Maintenance Team as soon as possible. The client is offering a full time, temporary position on an ongoing basis, with the ideal candidate having experience of working within a local authority within a highways maintenance / civil engineering environment.
The Role
Key purpose of the role:
To support the design, programming, and delivery of the Council’s planned maintenance of carriageways and footways. The role will involve supervising contractors, assessing sites, and ensuring works are delivered to time, cost, safety, and quality standards.

The Role
Key purpose of the role:
To support the design, programming, and delivery of the Council’s planned maintenance of carriageways and footways. The role will involve supervising contractors, assessing sites, and ensuring works are delivered to time, cost, safety, and quality standards.
Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Assess sites for inclusion in future planned maintenance programmes.
- Supervise contractors delivering resurfacing, reconstruction, and preventative treatment works.
- Monitor health & safety and ensure works are completed to specification and quality standards.
- Investigate and resolve complaints arising from works.
- Maintain site records, update engineers on progress, and escalate issues where required.
- Inspect works and identify remedial actions.
- Contribute to contract administration, KPI monitoring, and project reporting.
To be considered for this role you will require:
- A degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline, or an HNC/HND with relevant post-qualification experience, or full membership of a relevant professional institution.
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience in highway maintenance materials, techniques, and site works.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proven planning and organisational ability, with experience managing multiple sites and deadlines.
- Problem solving and decision-making skills with sound judgement.
- Strong ICT skills for analysing data and producing reports.
